Gene Pinder was born in Key West, raised in Illinois and has lived in the South for more than 20 years. When he's not painting, he is a marketing executive. He currently works for a major research university.

His introduction to art began as a youngster watching his grandfather paint on his enclosed porch. But Gene didn't pick up a brush until well into his 40s after taking an introductory art class in northern Alabama. The rest of his training has been mostly trial-and-error and learning from other, more accomplished artists. He's been painting now for just under 10 years and has completed nearly 400 pieces.

I feel fortunate I finally made the commitment to explore my artistic bent through painting. I had been wanting to do this for a long time. In fact, I took a terrible stab at in college. But if wasn't until I finally got some firm, basic fundamentals under my belt that I began to take my work more seriously.

It's been fun. I can lose myself in my work and explore rich themes, interesting colors and generally create something of lasting value or foolish chaos. One thing is clear, however -- my art is and will always be a work in progress. I have no illusions about it leading to notoriety. I paint because it's what I enjoy. Others should be so lucky.
